A green lino staircase, the kind you ascend on a visit to a municipal office, mild smell of bleach and a tinge of dread – the unheimlich. This work and the title are also reminiscent of Gerhard Richter’s ‘Ema (Nude on a Staircase)’ &amp; also Marcel Duchamp’s infamous ‘Nude on a Staircase (No.2)’. Thresholds continue to appear in Gavin Turk’s work again, and again, in the form of windows, doorways, eggs and art historical framing, the artist asks the viewer to pass through the image to a new paradigm.

This work is from a series titled ‘Cosmic Eggs’, where off cut plywood egg shapes are used as tables in the production of other works, where overspray accidents and colour tests are sealed with layers of varnish and the edge finished. In this case at the top of the painting shows remnants of an experimental sprayed yellow stick, or a magic wand.
