A green lino staircase, the kind you ascend on a visit to a municipal office, mild smell of bleach and a tinge of dread – the unheimlich. This work and the title are also reminiscent of Gerhard Richter’s ‘Ema (Nude on a Staircase)’ & also Marcel Duchamp’s infamous ‘Nude on a Staircase (No.2)’. Thresholds continue to appear in Gavin Turk’s work again, and again, in the form of windows, doorways, eggs and art historical framing, the artist asks the viewer to pass through the image to a new paradigm.
