MIYAZAKI meets Taguchi Art Collection: What is Contemporary Art?
10 Jul - 29 Aug 26
Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum, Miyazaki, Japan
The Taguchi Art Collection is a world-renowned contemporary art collection, built from a unique perspective by entrepreneur Hiroshi Taguchi and his daughter, Miwa Taguchi, through their keen observation of global economic trends and the art scene. Covering a diverse range of works by emerging to mid-career artists from across the globe—including Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa—the collection offers a compelling reflection of "the now."
This exhibition marks the first time the Taguchi Art Collection (Tagu-Colle) is being introduced in Miyazaki.
Part 1, "The Door to Contemporary Art," serves as an entry point into the world of contemporary art, featuring sculptures, videos, and installations by artists such as Kohei Nawa, Yusuke Asai, and José Dávila.
Part 2, "The Grand Hall of Contemporary Art," showcases works from various regions, centering on artists who have participated in the prestigious Venice Biennale, including the increasingly prominent Ethiopian artist Elias Sime.
Part 3, "Visiting the Artists," focuses on influential Japanese artists of various generations, such as Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, and Izumi Kato, highlighting the current landscape of Japanese contemporary art. From the collection’s vast archive of over 700 works, we are proud to present approximately 70 exceptional pieces, including 17 works being unveiled to the public for the first time. We invite you to experience this encounter with diverse and unique expressions that mirror our contemporary world, and to rediscover artists who have previously visited the Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum as guest speakers or jurors.
Organized by Miyazaki Prefectural Art Museum, Miyazaki Nichinichi Shimbun, UMK TV Miyazaki
In collaboration with Taguchi Foundation, Artsplus Institute of Contemporary Art, Art Office Shiobara
Supported by Miyazaki Prefectural Arts and Culture Association, Miyazaki Prefecture Association of Municipal Boards of Education
